The first batch of 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic attacks has arrived at the Accra International Airport.
The evacuees arrived aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight after departing O.R. Tambo International Airport on May 26, 2026.
Here is when first batch of Ghanaians will be airlifted from South Africa
They were received at the airport by a high-level government delegation, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, among others.
Videos sighted by GhanaWeb on social media and shared by The1957News captured the moment the aircraft landed, with security officials preparing to assist the passengers.
Another video shared by Fred Duhoe, an aide to the Foreign Affairs Minister, showed scenes inside the aircraft as the passengers remained seated while being warmly welcomed by Ablakwa.
Filled with excitement, the evacuees broke into song as they praised the government and the President for facilitating their return to Ghana.

The repatriation exercise follows growing xenophobic attacks against African nationals by some locals in South Africa.
