2. Destruction of Natural "Sponges" (Wetlands)
The Greater Accra area is naturally blessed with ecological buffers like the Sakumo Lagoon, Kpeshie Lagoon, and the Densu Delta. These wetlands act as massive natural retention ponds, absorbing excess water during heavy rain before slowly letting it out.
The Problem: Due to a fragmented land-tenure system and weak enforcement of building regulations, people have steadily filled in and built residential or commercial structures right on top of these wetlands and natural floodplains.
The Impact: With the natural "sponges" gone and buildings sitting directly in historic waterways, the water has nowhere to go but straight into people's living rooms and onto the asphalt.
3. The Clogged Arteries of the Drainage System
Accra's major primary drain is the Odaw River, which flows through the heart of the city into the Korle Lagoon and out to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Problem: The Odaw and its connected storm drains suffer from massive siltation and a severe plastic waste crisis. Poor solid waste management means tons of plastic bottles, bags, and household trash end up dumped into the gutters.
The Impact: This debris, combined with eroded soil, chokes the drains. A channel meant to carry vast amounts of water might lose over half its capacity because it is choked with sand and garbage. When a storm hits, the water hits a bottleneck, backs up, and causes catastrophic flash floods.
4. Low-Lying Topography
Geography also plays a cruel hand. A massive portion of Accra sits in a low-lying coastal basin. When heavy downpours coincide with high tides from the Atlantic Ocean, the sea effectively blocks the river outlets (like the Korle Lagoon), preventing the floodwaters from draining out into the ocean. The water has no choice but to push backward into the city.

How silly can we be as a country when we are quick to make spiritual emphasis in this case this article making it seem as if Wednesdays are designated doom days instead of tasking the people responsible, stakeholders and government to do so much better to curtail these tragedies.
How can we develop if we cannot see that proper infrastructural infrastructure policies instead of spiritual references is the only way to solve our issues.
