The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has defended delays in repair works on the Kaneshie Market Footbridge, citing coordination challenges linked to a planned project in the area.

In an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on June 8, 2026, he said the overlap between the footbridge’s rehabilitation and the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project has made it difficult to carry out permanent intervention works without affecting the broader design of the area.

According to the Mayor, authorities have been aware of the bridge’s condition for some time, but efforts to repair or replace it have been complicated by the planned gallery project expected to pass through the same location.

“We are doing a GARID project and the project is going to pass through where the bridge is. So, if I go in and do the bridge, GARID will still clear the bridge from there," he stated.

The Mayor explained that this has created a situation where any permanent work on the bridge must be carefully aligned with the design and execution of the larger development.

Despite the setbacks, he emphasised that public safety remains a key priority for the Assembly.

He called for patience from residents and stakeholders as efforts continue to align both projects in a way that avoids duplication of work and unnecessary expenditure.

“For now, they (commuters) should watch the policeman and the AMA people.

When they stop them, they stop. When it's time for them to pass, then they pass," the Mayor added.

The footbridge was temporarily closed on April 2, 2026, for urgent structural repairs.
