A New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman for the Manso Adubia Constituency, Kofi Acheampong, has criticised the government's proposed 24-hour economy policy, questioning its implementation and suggesting that it could inadvertently encourage social vices if not properly structured.

Speaking on the policy during an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Acheampong argued that what has so far been presented to the public appears to focus primarily on the construction of markets rather than a comprehensive economic transformation agenda.

"The 24-hour economy that was promised has become market building," he claimed.

According to him, the success of the policy depends heavily on reliable infrastructure, particularly a stable electricity supply, which he believes remains a challenge.

"The lights can't even stay on," he stated.

Acheampong further expressed concern about the potential misuse of market facilities during nighttime hours, arguing that if the markets are not actively occupied and properly supervised, they could become centres for undesirable activities.

"It seems the markets they are coming to build will end up being used by prostitutes for their business," he alleged.

He contended that without clear operational guidelines, adequate security, and effective supervision, the initiative could create opportunities for activities that fall outside its intended economic objectives.

The government has promoted the 24-hour economy policy as a key strategy to boost productivity, create jobs, increase industrial output, and stimulate economic growth by encouraging businesses and institutions to operate in shifts around the clock.
