Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin
A light-hearted moment unfolded on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, when Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, repeatedly struggled to pronounce the medical term “obstetric fistula,” drawing laughter and brief interruptions during proceedings.
The incident occurred during deliberations following a statement presented by Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, which focused on the condition and related healthcare interventions.
While contributing to the discussion, Afenyo-Markin called for urgent government action on maternal health, including the need to expand support for treatment of the condition under national health policy.

In the course of his remarks, he repeatedly attempted to pronounce obstetric fistula, a term referring to a serious childbirth-related medical condition classified under Obstetric fistula but stumbled over the phrasing several times, saying variations such as “obstetric trick” and repeating the term in quick succession.
At one point, he acknowledged the difficulty of technical terminology outside one’s professional field, drawing an analogy to legal professionals using Latin terms.
The comment further lightened the atmosphere in the chamber.
The Minority Leader used his contribution to push for policy attention to maternal healthcare.
He urged Parliament and the Ministry of Health to ensure that treatment for obstetric fistula is included in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefits package, as well as in the proposed Ghana Medical Fund.
