I very much remember when Ghanaians could not afford to pay for School fees at the Boarding and lodging schools, South Africans were having free education and were housed fed freely. And they have businesses in Ghana, Nigeria and many other African countries. Why not treat them in the same currency, seize their properties and just deport them. That is nothing new. During Prime Minister Busia's government Ghana sent more than half a million Nigerians packing. Gleeful and jubilant Ghanaians watched as sobbing Nigerians took whatever they could carry after selling their businesses at knockdown prices (in some cases 10-20% of their real value) and headed back for Nigeria. Basically, it was a mass scale eviction of hundreds of thousands of Nigerians from Ghana who were for the most part effective petty traders. There are still black and white newsreel videos and photos showing Ghanaians rejoicing as they took over the stores and enterprises that were reasonably well run by thousands of Nigerians. You see, Nigerians who had fled the brutal Biafran civil war back home were the first to set up small businesses and enterprises on a very wide scale in Ghana. In those days, Nigerian petty traders and Nigerian run stores could be found in virtually every city, town and village in Ghana. Their products were very reasonably priced, compared to what would follow within a year or two later when indolent and vastly inexperienced Ghanaians took over these economic activities.
WHEN GHANAIANS, WHO LACKED ANY EXPERIENCE IN COMMERCE AND WERE UNFAMILIAR AWITH THE DYNAMICS OF RUNNING SUCH BUSINESSES TOOK OVER CHAOS ENSUED- THE COST OF GOODS RAPIDLY SOARED AS THE ECONOMY BECAME DISLOCATED DUE IN PART TO THE DISRUPTION OF WELL-ESTABLISHED SUPPLY CHAINS. It took Ghana a few decades to sufficiently recover from this economic dislocation (a situation that was further exacerbated by subsequent political turmoil).
Ironically, less than a decade later an economically flourishing Nigeria made the same foolish mistake and sent millions of Ghanaians packing on the false belief that Ghanaians were taking all the jobs in Nigeria. As was the case in Ghana in the late 60s/early 70S , in Nigeria in the mid to late 70s and now in South Africa, politicians exploited growing hostility against immigrants to explain their own failing economic policies (or lack of it ). Many politicians actively encouraged this entirely false view that immigrants were responsible for their country’s deep and longstanding economic and social woes.
SOUTH AFRICA’S SITUATION IS LIKELY TO END UP IN A FAR WORSE STATE BECAUSE OF THE TERRIBLE LEGACY OF APARTHEID THAT HAS LEFT A WHOLE GENERATION OF AN ECONOMICALLY DEPRIVED AND EMOTIONALLY SCARRED MAJORITY BLACK POPULATION. South African black society remains deeply fractured along tribal and economic levels that makes the problems of other Black African countries look tame.
