Timber traders' representative, Edem Koko Edem, has urged the government to intervene in the challenges confronting players in the timber industry, particularly their dealings with the Forestry Commission and security agencies.

Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Edem said timber traders across the country continue to face difficulties during the transportation of timber products, a situation he believes requires urgent attention from the authorities.

He specifically appealed to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to step in and help resolve the concerns before they escalate further.

“If he does not intervene, his government will be disgraced, President John Mahama will be disgraced, and he himself will also be disgraced,” he warned.

According to Edem, timber traders have confidence in the Chief of Staff's ability to listen to their grievances and facilitate a lasting solution.

“We know that he is the only person we can cry to who will listen to our plight, and we also know that his position will allow him to do something tangible about the situation,” he stated.

The timber traders' representative also reflected on the relationship between the sector and political leaders during the 2024 electioneering period, claiming that traders welcomed President John Dramani Mahama while denying former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia access to campaign at the Techiman Timber Market.

“Former Vice President Dr Bawumia was not allowed into the Techiman Timber Market to campaign during the last elections, but President Mahama was allowed to enter,” he claimed.

Edem further noted that some of the individuals who facilitated Mahama's engagement with traders are now among those expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the industry.

He therefore called on the government to engage stakeholders and review policies affecting the timber sector to ensure the smooth operation of businesses and protect livelihoods dependent on the industry.
