Andy Appiah-Kubi, lawyer for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has spoken after the High Court dismissed his motion seeking to withdraw as counsel for his client.

In a video shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on June 15, 2026, Appiah-Kubi expressed disappointment over the court’s decision.

Referring to a recent legal development involving Godfred Yeboah Dame, counsel for former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, he explained that his decision to file the motion was influenced by the legal principles outlined in that ruling.

He further stated that there are two possible outcomes in the matter involving the Attorney General and Chairman Wontumi.

According to him, based on the evidence before the court, the final ruling could either bring disgrace or glory.

“There are two possible outcomes from this ruling based on the evidence available, and it is either disgrace or glory. So, whoever makes a decision in this case based on the evidence available will either face glory or disgrace.

“The Supreme Court, during its ruling involving the Attorney General and Justice Torkornoo, stated that a lawyer’s letter informing the court of a decision to withdraw was incompetent. The Supreme Court did not say the ruling applied only to civil trials; it referred to withdrawal generally. That is why I filed a motion to properly withdraw my services,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi further stated that his next step would be to formally notify his client and officially withdraw from the case.

“My next step is to officially serve notice of withdrawal and remove myself from the case. The court said the procedure through which I sought to withdraw is unknown to criminal jurisprudence, and I agree,” he added.

Meanwhile, the trial involving Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited over alleged illegal mining activities in Samreboi has officially concluded.

The Accra High Court has fixed July 3, 2026, to deliver its final judgment after both the prosecution and defence closed their cases and filed final arguments.

The accused face multiple charges, including allegations of facilitating unlicensed mining operations and transferring mineral rights without ministerial approval within the Samreboi concession area in Ghana's Western Region.

The prosecution, led by the Attorney General's Department, completed its case after calling several witnesses. The defence also called witnesses in response.

Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, who is presiding over the case, has directed both sides to file their final written submissions by June 17, 2026.

Throughout the proceedings, Chairman Wontumi has remained on bail under conditions including a GH¢15 million bail bond, surrender of his passport, and a travel restriction.

The court is expected to deliver its final verdict on July 3, 2026.
