The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has appointed lawyer and former Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, to represent him in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

The move follows the decision by Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi to withdraw from the case.

Appiah-Kubi had indicated his intention to file a notice of withdrawal after Criminal Court 4 dismissed an application seeking leave to discontinue his legal representation of Chairman Wontumi.

In its ruling, the court held that the application was not supported by any rule of court or judicial authority. It further stated that, in criminal proceedings, a lawyer does not require the court's permission to discontinue legal representation, as such matters are between counsel and the client.

The court also noted that the application had not been served on Chairman Wontumi, a factor it considered significant in dismissing the motion.

Meanwhile, the court maintained its timetable for the case and directed all parties to file their final addresses by June 24, 2026.

Judgment is expected to be delivered on July 3, 2026.
