Police seize 5,039 parcels of 'volta cocaine'

Police in the Volta Regional capital, Ho and their Tema counterparts have intercepted five thousand and thirty-nine (5,039) wrapped parcels suspected to be narcotic drugs at Afienya, on the Tema-Akosombo road, in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026.

The substances, stuffed in sixty-three maxi sacks, were being conveyed in a Howo China tipper truck, with registration number GN 2287-24. Two persons, Solomon Akuaku, 26, driver and James Tetteh, 31, driver’s mate, were apprehended to assist police with the investigation.

A highly placed source at the Police Headquarters in Accra, who pleaded anonymity, told The Chronicle that the Volta Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) boss picked up intelligence on the movement of the said Chinese tipper truck suspected to be conveying the contraband items and heading towards Tema from the Juapong direction.

As a result, a team of intelligence officers from Ho was deployed to work with their counterparts in Tema to track the tipper truck. Another squad, led by the Tema night-duty officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Agyemfra Amanor, proceeded to the Star Oil filling station on the outskirts of Afienya and joined the men from Ho to track the vehicle's movements.

Shortly, as expected, the green Howo China tipper truck was spotted on the road from the Akosombo direction and stopped for inspection. The consignment was found in the truck, leading to the arrest of the driver and his mate, who named one ‘Red’ as the owner, and that the suspected narcotics were heading to Ada.
