The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has responded to presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong over his recent comments on the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

In a social media post on June 17, 2026, Dr Afriye, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, stated that Kennedy Agyapong should be abreast with facts and not rely on sheer populism in making his claims.

He shared receipts of payments made by the NPP government to support the hospital project, insisting that the previous administration did not neglect the facility.

In a series of posts, Dr Afriye alleged that Agyapong had ties with the contractor working on the project. He added that during a visit, the contractor disclosed that only sewerage works were outstanding, while Phase 1 of the facility was ready for use.

Providing details of payments and commitments by the NPP government, Dr Afriye wrote, “Folks, attached is a letter requesting $6 million as final payment for works at Afari Hospital.

The minister renegotiated and paid EDI.”

He added, “Facts for Ken Agyapong & not sheer populism:

1.“Government paid the full $180 million [entire project cost].

2.“Minister Nitiwul paid an additional re-evaluation bill in full at $19.3 million.

3.“Minister Nitiwul paid a final $2.5 million out of the $3 million [government renegotiated his proposed $6 million to $3 million, paid $2.5 million, leaving a balance of $500,000 as of December 31, 2024].”

Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, had accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of lacking moral grounds to criticise the government regarding the project.

Speaking during a donation exercise to mark his 66th birthday celebration in Accra on June 16, 2026, he argued that the NPP was in power for eight years but failed to complete the hospital.

He therefore described it as unfair to blame the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has been in office for only 15 months, for not operationalising the facility.

Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus in Parliament recently visited the facility and accused the government of abandoning the project.
