The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of school property at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region, warning that those responsible will face both legal and disciplinary sanctions.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 16, 2026, after some students reportedly turned violent over the strict enforcement of examination regulations during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The disturbances left two teachers injured and caused damage to school property.
In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, the Service described the attack as unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline, respect, and integrity that schools seek to instill in students.
According to GES, preliminary reports indicate that the violence was triggered by the enforcement of examination rules by invigilators during the WASSCE.
The Service noted that attacks on teachers performing their official duties constitute a serious breach of school discipline and pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of education personnel.
GES further disclosed that security personnel have since been deployed to the school to maintain order and ensure the smooth continuation of teaching, learning, and examination activities.
It added that the two injured teachers are receiving medical attention and the necessary support.
The Service said it is collaborating with security agencies to investigate the incident and identify all students and individuals involved in the attack.
"Anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law, in addition to disciplinary measures under GES regulations," the statement stressed.
GES reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for both students and teachers across the country and urged all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at promoting discipline and respect within schools.
