The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Abaa Apaak, has defended the timing of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo's resignation, insisting that no law was breached despite questions about when her decision was formally accepted and made public.

Reacting to concerns about why the government is only now disclosing the resignation, Apaak explained during a panel discussion on Joy News' Newsfile on June 20, 2026, that the government spokesperson had already clarified the matter.

According to him, Sophia Akuffo submitted her resignation in September 2025, but the president delayed accepting it following an intervention by the Council of State to allow room for dialogue and possible reconciliation.

"Well, the government spokesperson addressed that. And he indicated that, yes, she had tendered her resignation in September last year. And that upon an intervention by the Council, the President was convinced to stay accepting the resignation for the Council to try and see whether they could speak to her to find out if she had some grievances that could be addressed.

"And I think the intent was to see whether she would have rescinded her decision. That didn't happen. And now the matter has been made public," Dr Apaak stated.

He dismissed concerns about the legality of the process, stressing that the timing of the announcement did not amount to any violation of the law.

"Whether it is late or it is early, I don't believe that the situation caused any breach of any law or there is an indication of any infraction. So I think that she has done this probably based on principle, as others have alluded to. And she has chosen not to make her reason public," he said.

Dr Apaak further noted that Sophia Akuffo had not communicated her reasons for resigning to the Presidency and described her as someone who would openly state her views if she wished to do so.

He cautioned against speculation regarding her motives, insisting that the true reasons for her resignation remain known only to her.

"Knowing her, she is not a timid soul. If she wants us to know why she resigned, she will say it," he remarked.

"And while she has not decided to say, we cannot guess or try to, if you like, decipher and find out why she decided to resign. I mean, people have made all kinds of arguments. But until she speaks, we can all conjecture. Nobody can truly know the reason why she resigned," Dr Apaak concluded.
