United States immigration lawyer Benedicta Agyemang has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's son petitioned for his father to be granted permanent residency in the United States.

The Massachusetts-based legal practitioner stated that Ofori-Atta's son has been the driving force behind efforts to secure residency status for his father in the US, despite the corruption allegations the former minister faces in Ghana.

However, she did not provide details on how the process was initiated or the specific steps taken to advance the application.

Ken Ofori-Atta’s son petitioned for a US green card for him,” Benedicta Agyemang said, as reported by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Facebook.

The disclosure comes after Ofori-Atta secured a favourable ruling from a United States immigration court, which approved his application to adjust his immigration status, moving him a step closer to obtaining lawful permanent residency.

The decision was delivered on June 16, 2026, during proceedings on Ofori-Atta’s I-485 petition, a key stage in the process of acquiring a US green card.

According to his lawyer, Frank Davies, the court considered issues relating to the criminal investigations and charges currently facing Ofori-Atta in Ghana as part of its assessment.

It was also indicated that evidence was presented by a witness with expertise in international policing and Interpol procedures, who reportedly raised concerns about aspects of the process used by Ghanaian authorities in pursuing the case.

However, the ruling does not affect the allegations Ofori-Atta continues to face in Ghana.
