Two people have lost their lives after a building collapsed in Cape Coast following a heavy downpour that struck parts of the Central Regional capital in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa, hospital authorities have confirmed.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident occurred at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, where a single-room structure caved in, trapping four occupants beneath the rubble.

Personnel from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station and the Central Regional Fire Service Headquarters swiftly responded to distress calls and launched a rescue operation at the scene.

The rescue team successfully extricated all four victims from the collapsed structure and handed them over to the National Ambulance Service for transportation to the Ewim Polyclinic for emergency medical attention.

However, despite efforts by health workers, Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa were later pronounced dead.

The two other victims, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, are receiving medical treatment.

Preliminary investigations by the Central Regional Command of the GNFS indicate that the building may have collapsed after prolonged heavy rainfall weakened its structural integrity.

The Fire Service has subsequently urged residents living in old mud houses and buildings showing signs of structural defects to seek professional structural assessments and evacuate unsafe structures, particularly during the rainy season.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
