A Ghanaian woman who recently returned from Iraq has shared her experience of working as a housemaid in the Middle Eastern country, describing the conditions as difficult and unbearable.
According to her, she spent two years working in Iraq but decided to return to Ghana because of the treatment she received and the harsh living conditions she endured.

In a video interview sighted by GhanaWeb, on June 22, 2026, the lady, who did not disclose her identity, said domestic workers are often subjected to poor treatment, adding that her experience felt like slavery.
She said she has no intention of returning to Iraq despite the opportunities that may exist there.
“I spent 2 years in Iraq working as a housemaid. The living conditions were very difficult, but I had no choice but to endure and survive. Now that I have returned to Ghana, I don’t think I will ever travel back to the country.
“The kind of treatment I was put through was really bad, as if it were slavery. Even when I booked my flight to return to Ghana, they made me work, leaving me exhausted,” she recounted.
The video also showed another returnee from Iraq, identified as Priscilla Anane, sharing a similar experience.

According to Anane, she spent three years working in the country under harsh conditions, which she said made life and work extremely difficult.
