The family of the late Apostle Emeritus Prof Ing Kwadwo Safo has rejected claims that his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, is the legitimate successor of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

The family’s reaction follows the installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, as the new leader of the church by the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana.

The announcement of the installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, was made through the mission’s official Facebook page on Sunday, June 21, 2026, accompanied by a congratulatory message and a video marking his assumption of office.

However, in a statement issued on Monday, June 22, 2026, the Kwadwo Safo family disclosed that although Apostle Kwadwo Safo appointed Israel Safo as his successor in 2017 and entrusted him with the leadership of the church as well as oversight of the businesses he established, that mandate was later withdrawn.

According to the family, several businesses within the Kristo Asafo group experienced significant setbacks during Israel Safo’s stewardship, with some collapsing while others were pushed to the brink of collapse.

They further alleged that changes were made to some of the church’s core principles and that Israel Safo increasingly exercised authority in ways that disregarded the directives of the founder.

“These developments prompted Apostle Kwadwo Safo to revoke the mandate granted to his son in 2024 and remove the provisions conferring that authority from the church’s governing framework,” the statement said.

The statement indicated that the late founder subsequently appointed former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, as Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family and established a fresh roadmap for succession within the Kristo Asafo Mission.

“The succession framework was amended and explicitly excluded Mr Israel Safo from consideration for the leadership position,” the family stated.

The family stressed that it does not recognise any installation or assumption of leadership by Israel Safo that contradicts the directives left behind by the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

The family therefore dissociated itself from any claims by Israel Safo that he is acting on behalf of the Kwadwo Safo Family or with the family's authority.

The family also cautioned the public against engaging in transactions or dealings with Israel Safo that purport to represent the interests, assets, leadership or affairs of either the Kristo Asafo Mission or the Kwadwo Safo Family.

The family reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the legacy, assets and final wishes of the late Apostle Emeritus Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo and indicated that it would pursue all available legal avenues to protect them.
