‎The High Court has directed that the long‑running case involving Latif Iddrisu, a Multimedia Group journalist, the Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General proceed to trial, after rejecting a fresh request by the State for more time to pursue an out‑of‑court settlement.

‎According to a myjoyonline.com report on June 23, 2026, the ruling brings the matter back to active proceedings four months after the State first informed the court that steps had been initiated to compensate Iddrisu and resolve the case without further litigation.

‎At a February 2026 hearing, Senior State Attorney, Nancynita Twumasi Asiamah, told the court that the Attorney General’s Office had instructed her to notify the court of ongoing settlement processes.

‎The court subsequently granted adjournments to allow consultations, but when the State again sought an additional six weeks, trial judge Justice Eudora Christina Dadson declined.

‎She noted that while the court was not opposed to settlement, the case had been pending for years with little progress since the State’s initial announcement.

‎She therefore directed that cross‑examination resume, adding that any settlement agreement reached could still be adopted by the court.

‎According to report, sources familiar with the proceedings indicated that only one meeting had been held between representatives of the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of the IGP, counsel for the plaintiff, Samson Lardy Anyenini and Latif Iddrisu since the State announced its intention to settle.

About the Latif Iddrisu case

‎The case stems from an incident in which Iddrisu was allegedly assaulted by police officers while covering a demonstration.

‎He was allegedly assaulted on March 27, 2018, while covering a demonstration at the CID headquarters in Accra in a protest organized by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who had gathered after the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho, was arrested.

‎During that demonstration, Latif was reportedly beaten by police officers after asking about a crowd‑control vehicle.

‎The attack left him with a fractured skull and long‑term medical complications.

‎He has since required ongoing medical treatment in the United States.

‎The State’s February announcement of plans to compensate the journalist was welcomed by sections of the media fraternity, including the Ghana Journalists Association, which described the move as a step toward accountability.

‎The matter has since been adjourned to July 14 and July 16, 2026, when cross‑examination of the first defence witness is expected to give his account.
