Nana Akomea is Chairman of the Communication Committee of NPP
The Chairman of the Communication Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has lashed out at politicians in the country for failing to address perennial flooding in the country.
Speaking on UTV's Kokroko on June 24, 2026, he expressed worry over the situation, noting that, in this year alone, many communities, including Samreboi have been inundated by floodwaters.
“The flooding situation is very frustrating. This year we have experienced heavy rains across the country, not only in Accra. Look at what has happened in Samreboi,” he said.

According to him, the problem has persisted across successive governments from the era of former President Jerry John Rawlings till present day, without any lasting solution.
He argued that political leadership has consistently failed to find a sustainable solution to flooding.
“All politicians in the country, right from the Rawlings era till date, have failed to address flooding in the country,” he stated.
Nana Akomea also recalled that President John Dramani Mahama had previously attributed flooding during the Akufo-Addo administration to bad governance and had promised to resolve the issue if elected.
“I remember Mahama attributed flooding during Akufo-Addo’s time to bad governance and promised to address it if elected, but now he is in office and the situation has not improved,” he remarked.
Nana Akomea bemoaned poor drainage systems in Accra and stressed the need for long-term infrastructure solutions rather than periodic interventions such as desilting drains.
He noted that the Odaw River continues to serve as a major drainage channel but is overwhelmed whenever heavy rains occur.
“The large part of Accra does not have proper drainage systems. From Achimota, Kaneshie, Alajo, and Kokomlemle, all these places drain water into the Odaw River. Politicians have failed because no government has done anything to improve major drainage systems in Accra.
"We must look for long-term solutions and not desilting the Odaw River, it is a major drainage in Accra. The drainage systems must be expanded,” he added.
Torrential rains throughout June 2026 have triggered devastating floods across Ghana, displacing citizens and disrupting urban transportation.
