Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Dr Adam Bonaa, has disclosed that fewer than 10 sidearms have been licensed to private citizens since January 2025.

Speaking during a discussion on firearm regulation on TV3 following the shooting incident involving former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo, Dr Bonaa said the figure reflects a more restrictive approach to firearm licensing.

“Less than 10 sidearms have been given to private citizens,” he stated.

According to him, the measure forms part of broader efforts to address the longstanding challenge of illegal weapons circulation in the country.

“This is an issue that has existed for years. You don’t come in and attempt a quick fix,” Dr Bonaa said.

He described the proliferation of unauthorized weapons as a long-standing national security concern that requires sustained and coordinated action.

“It is an existential problem that must be dealt with,” he added.

Dr Bonaa explained that limiting the issuance of new civilian firearm licences is one component of a wider strategy aimed at controlling the proliferation of weapons and enhancing public safety.
