Stay Alert, Stay Safe: 10 flood safety tips for rainy days

Parts of the country have once again been hit by flooding following hours of continuous rainfall that submerged homes and inundated several communities.

The heavy downpour, which began late Sunday, June 28, 2026 into early Monday, June 29, 2026, particularly across the capital city, Accra, has caused extensive flooding, leaving properties damaged and many residents stranded.

As communities deal with the impact of the floods, here are 10 important safety tips everyone should follow to stay safe from floods.

1. Move to higher ground immediately

If floodwaters begin to rise, leave low-lying areas and move to higher ground. Do not wait until the situation worsens.

2. Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater

Avoid walking, swimming or driving through moving water. Floodwater can be deeper and flow faster than it appears, making it extremely dangerous.

3. Keep children away from floodwater

Do not allow children to play or swim in floodwater. Closely supervise them and warn them to stay away from flooded areas and flowing water.

4. Do not cross flooded roads, bridges or streams

Never attempt to cross flooded roads, swollen streams, bridges, culverts or spillways on foot or in a vehicle. Fast-moving water can easily sweep people and vehicles away.

5. Stay indoors during heavy rain and thunderstorms

Avoid going outside during severe downpours or thunderstorms to reduce the risk of being swept away by floodwaters or struck by lightning.

6. Switch off utilities if flooding threatens your home

Turn off electricity, gas, and water supplies at the main switches if you are asked to evacuate or if floodwater is entering your home.

7. Secure important belongings

Move important documents, electronic devices, and other valuables to the highest level of your home to reduce damage.

8. Stay on the highest safe level of your home

If trapped by floodwater, move to the highest level of your home. Avoid enclosed spaces such as attics or lofts without an exit, as rising water could trap you.

9. Unplug electrical appliances before the storm

Heavy rains are often accompanied by lightning. Unplug electrical appliances and devices before the storm arrives to protect them from power surges.

10. Leave your vehicle if it gets trapped in floodwater

If your vehicle becomes stuck or starts being carried away by floodwater, abandon it immediately and move to higher ground. If water is entering the vehicle and you cannot get out safely, climb onto the roof and wait for help.
