Ghana is at the peak of its rainy season, with more downpours expected in the coming weeks.

While safety advice during heavy rains often focuses on what people should do, there is less attention on the actions they should avoid.

Yet, some common mistakes can increase the risk of injury, electrocution, road crashes, and even death.

Here are 10 things you should avoid whenever it is raining.

1. Do not drive too fast

Wet roads reduce tyre grip and increase braking distance. Slow down, leave enough space between your vehicle and the one ahead, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

2. Never drive through floodwater

Do not attempt to drive through standing or moving water. The depth may be greater than it appears, and floodwater can hide potholes or cause your vehicle to stall or be swept away.

3. Do not touch electrical equipment when you are wet

Avoid handling electrical appliances, switches, sockets or exposed wiring if you are drenched. Faulty electrical systems can cause serious electric shocks or electrocution.

4. Do not stand under trees

Trees are not safe shelters during heavy rain or thunderstorms. Lightning can strike them, while strong winds may cause branches to fall.

5. Do not stay in the rain for long periods

Remaining in heavy rain for a long time can expose you to cold conditions and increase the risk of illness. Seek shelter as soon as possible.

6. Do not use electronic devices without protecting them

Keep phones, tablets, cameras and other electronic devices away from rainwater. Use waterproof bags or cases to prevent damage.

7. Do not leave electrical equipment outdoors

Generators, extension cords and other electrical equipment should be unplugged or properly covered to prevent electrical accidents and damage.

8. Do not ignore slippery surfaces

Avoid wearing footwear with smooth soles when walking in the rain. Slippery pavements and roads can easily cause falls and injuries.

9. Do not assume visibility is clear

Heavy rain can reduce visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. Be extra careful when crossing roads, wear bright or reflective clothing where possible, and use vehicle headlights when driving.

10. Do not attempt to rescue people from floodwater on your own

Floodwater can be stronger than it appears. If someone is trapped, call emergency services instead of attempting a rescue unless you have the proper training and equipment.
