The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a temporary shutdown at the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains in the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint press release issued on June 29, 2026, the two state-owned utility service providers confirmed that rising floodwaters have inundated critical electrical infrastructure at several facilities, forcing an emergency precautionary shutdown to ensure public safety and protect vital equipment.

"The precautionary shutdown became necessary because the flooding has affected critical power infrastructure at a number of substations, posing significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel.

"To safeguard lives, protect property, and prevent damage to the electricity network, GRIDCo and ECG have taken the decision to temporarily switch off power supply from the affected substations until conditions are safe for restoration", it noted.

GRIDCo and ECG further stated that technical teams have been deployed to continuously monitor the situation.

"GRIDCo and ECG are continuously monitoring the situation and undertaking detailed assessments of the impact of the flooding on the transmission and distribution network," the statement said.

It urged the public to brace up for additional, temporary power interruptions in other affected areas.

"The public is advised that power supply may be temporarily interrupted in other affected areas, where necessary, as a precautionary measure," it added.
