Assembly Member for the Wuxor, Have and Sremanu Electoral Area, Japhet Festus Gbede, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action against illegal structures obstructing waterways across the country following the Monday, June29, 2026, flooding in parts of Accra.

In a strongly worded public statement posted on his official Facebook page, Gbede described the floods as "nature's verdict on our negligence" and argued that years of unlawful development on waterways have put countless lives at risk.

He urged the president to deploy the security agencies, particularly the National Security Secretariat and the Ghana Armed Forces, to embark on immediate demolition of illegal structures built on waterways, clear blocked storm drains, and enforce planning regulations without fear or favour.

According to the Assembly Member, floodwaters do not discriminate based on wealth, social status, or political affiliation, stressing that every illegal structure on a waterway poses a direct threat to public safety.

Gbede further warned that delaying decisive action would only expose more communities to preventable disasters, insisting that the flooding situation should be treated as a national security concern.

He appealed to the government to act swiftly to reclaim waterways, restore effective drainage systems, and prevent future flood-related tragedies.
