Rev John Ntim Fordjour is the Member of Parliament for Assin South
Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the government to declare Ghana’s capital, Accra, a disaster emergency zone for one week following the devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across the city after hours of torrential rainfall.
In a post shared on his social media platforms on June 29, 2026, the lawmaker said the worsening flood situation demands urgent and decisive action from the government to prevent further loss of life and destruction of property.
According to him, the declaration would allow for the immediate activation of all security agencies and emergency response institutions to undertake coordinated rescue, relief, and recovery operations across the affected communities.
“On the ongoing Accra FLOODS: The government must declare Accra a DISASTER EMERGENCY for one week starting today!
“Without delay, this is the time to activate all security agencies and emergency services in a well-coordinated, full-scale rescue operation and emergency response, while working with **the** Department of Urban Roads and **the** Ghana Highway Authority to ensure key access routes are made accessible amid flooded roads across the city.
More lives should not be lost, **and** more properties should not be damaged before action is taken. Sympathies to all affected victims,” he said.
His comments come as hundreds of residents across parts of the Greater Accra Region remain stranded in their homes following severe flooding triggered by heavy overnight rains that began on the night of June 28 and continued into June 29.
The floods submerged major roads, inundated homes and businesses, and left several communities cut off as drainage systems overflowed under the volume of water.
The disaster has so far claimed about nine lives, according to reports, although emergency officials have cautioned that the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue in the worst-hit areas.
Emergency response teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and other security agencies have since been deployed to affected communities.
Their operations are focused on rescuing trapped residents, evacuating vulnerable persons to safer locations, assisting stranded motorists whose vehicles have been submerged, and restoring access to flooded roads.
Search-and-rescue efforts remain ongoing as authorities continue to assess the extent of the destruction while appealing to residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious and cooperate with emergency personnel.
