The project left a deep excavation that is now threatening the safety of pupils
Residents of Bompata in the Ashanti Region have raised alarm over exposed pits at a construction site near Yaa Achiaa M/A Basic School at Bompata, near Roman Hill, Kumasi.
According to an Otec FM report, the project sanctioned by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, are meant to be commercial stores.
However, residents are particularly concerned because of the slow pace and unsecured nature of the project, sited on part of the land belonging to Yaa Achiaa M/A Basic School,as it poses a threat to pupils.
The nature of the construction has left deep excavation which threatens the safety of pupils.
An OTEC News visit to the school on Thursday, July 2, 2026, by Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng revealed that portions of the school compound has been left with deep excavations that have been left open.
Kindergarten pupils currently have unguarded access to a deep hole left on site by the contractor.
The Public Relations Officer for KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, confirmed to OTEC News that the Assembly is fully aware of the ongoing construction.
“This is a Public-Private Partnership between KMA and a private developer,” Madam Aboagye stated.
“Both parties agreed that students must be protected, so we will ensure the right thing is done,” she indicated.
She added that KMA has already directed the contractor to secure the entire area to protect the children.
“The Assembly will deploy our engineers there to once again ensure the place is totally cordoned off from the school,” she said.
According to the KMA PRO, the development forms part of efforts by the Assembly to remove unauthorized structures and replace them with a befitting commercial facility.
Meanwhile, parents and school authorities are calling for urgent action to secure the site before any tragedy occurs.
