Private legal practitioner and member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has recounted how he narrowly escaped death after floodwaters entered his home during the recent floods that hit Accra.

Speaking on Joy Prime on July 2, 2026, he stated that before the rains started, he had plugged a fan into a floor socket.

As the floodwaters rose, he walked into the room and suddenly felt a tingling sensation.

According to Jantuah, the electricity supply was cut at precisely the right moment, preventing what could have been a fatal accident.

"I was lucky. I had a small plug on the floor where I had plugged in a fan. When it started raining, the lights were on. I was only lucky. I remembered, as I stepped into the room, I felt the tingling when the lights went off. That was my only saviour," he recalled.

The experience, he said, has changed his perspective on why the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) often switches off power during heavy rainfall.

"And this is how I now understand why ECG takes the lights when it rains," he noted.

The floods wreaked havoc on communities across Accra, leaving destruction in their wake and exposing the city’s ongoing struggle with drainage and urban planning challenges.

The Mallam and Achimota electric power substations were also temporarily shut down to safeguard lives, protect property, and prevent damage to the electricity network.
