Please Oh, at the time of the coup, Major General CM Bawa was the Army Chief of Staff. He was a Brigadier and appointed Major General in July 1965. Brigadier N A Aferi was also appointed Major General and Chief of Defence Staff in July 1965. Please both of them took over from Major General S J A Otu, the Chief of Defence Staff and Major General J A Ankrah who were retired in July 1965. Please according to President Nkrumah who appointed them, at the time of the coup, Major General Bawa was the Army Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and was in Command of the Ghana Army in the absence from the country of the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General A N Aferi.
