The Nkoko Nketenkete (Household and Backyard Poultry Production) Initiative was introduced with brilliant intentions. Launched under the broader Feed Ghana Programme, it aimed to tackle a massive national problem: cutting down Ghana's staggering $350 million annual poultry import bill by turning everyday citizens into small-scale poultry producers. On paper, it was an incredible blueprint for economic empowerment—especially for youth, women, and vulnerable families. Each beneficiary was supposed to receive a comprehensive starter kit: 50 resilient birds (pullets/cockerels), localized poultry cages, and structural feed support to carry the birds through to maturity. However, the massive gap between the policy's design and its actual execution turned a brilliant idea into a heavy financial burden for the very people it was meant to lift up. The strategy collapsed because the government delivered on only one piece of a three-part promise. While the birds were distributed, the structural ecosystem required to keep them alive—namely the cages and, most importantly, the poultry feed never arrived. When beneficiaries were handed 50 hungry chicks without the promised feed support, they were suddenly hit with a massive, daily out-of-pocket expense. For vulnerable households living hand-to-mouth, finding money to buy commercial feed was practically impossible. Without the promised poultry cages, beneficiaries lacked a secure, hygienic space to safely house the birds. This exposed the young chicks to harsh weather, diseases, and predators, driving up mortality rates and adding mental stress to the struggling caretakers. Instead of acting as a source of supplementary income, the birds became a financial drain. As the weeks dragged on and the promised government support failed to materialize, people rapidly lost interest. The project felt less like an empowerment initiative and more like an unsustainable financial trap. Because the birds were draining household finances and families could not afford to wait the full 6 to 8 weeks for broilers (or months for layers) to reach commercial maturity, beneficiaries made the most logical survival choice available: they ate the birds.
Instead of growing the flock to sell back to the program or the local market, the chickens were cooked for household meals to offset the money already wasted on keeping them alive. LETS ADMIT IT, IT WAS A FAILURE
