Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as head coach of Ghana's senior national football team, the Black Stars, following the country's exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana's World Cup journey came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, bringing an end to the Black Stars' hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

In a farewell message shared on social media on July 5, 2026, the Portuguese tactician reflected on his time with the national team, saying football teaches an important lesson, "You either win or you learn."

"I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination, it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions," Queiroz wrote.

The former coach stressed that the future success of the Black Stars depends not only on performances on the pitch but also on building strong structures off the field.

"The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars' success must start off the field by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana's extraordinary football talent," he stated.

Queiroz also thanked the leadership of the Ghana Football Association for giving him the opportunity to lead the four-time African champions.

"To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars," he said.

He further expressed gratitude to his players and backroom staff for their commitment and dedication during his tenure.

Addressing Ghanaian supporters, the outgoing coach acknowledged that the team had fallen short of its ultimate objective but insisted that the Black Stars had regained respect on the global stage.
