The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has congratulated Ing. Rev. Professor Charles Anum Adams on his election as President-Elect of the West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO).

Professor Adams, a distinguished Fellow and former President of GhIE, was elected during the WAFEO-ECOWAS inaugural conference held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on June 15, 2026.

He is expected to assume office in January 2027 for a two-year term ending in January 2029, succeeding Liberia’s Engr. Dadley Decontee Toe.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 6, 2026, GhIE described the election as a major milestone for Ghana’s engineering profession, saying it reflects the country’s growing influence in engineering practice, research, and regional collaboration.

The President of GhIE, Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, said Professor Adams’ election is a recognition of his distinguished career and unwavering commitment to advancing engineering excellence.

“On behalf of the Council and the entire membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ing. Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams on this remarkable achievement. His election is a proud moment for our Institution and for Ghana.

“We are confident that his visionary leadership, extensive experience, and commitment to regional collaboration will strengthen WAFEO and further elevate the engineering profession across West Africa,” he said.

Professor Adams is an internationally recognised civil and transportation engineer, academic, consultant, and researcher with more than 30 years of experience.

He is the founding Director of the African Centre of Excellence Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He has also held several international leadership positions, including serving on the External Relations Committee of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO), as Vice President (Academic) of the International Road Federation Road Safety Committee, and as founder of the Transport Logistics and Smart Cities Network.

His research focuses on transport infrastructure systems, road asset management, road safety, public transport, infrastructure auditing, electric mobility, net-zero carbon transport, and environmental risk management.

Professor Adams has also led several regional initiatives, including the Transport Leadership Advancement Project (TransCAP Africa) and the Centre for Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Leadership (CSSTL).

GhIE said his election comes at a critical time when Africa is seeking stronger engineering leadership to address infrastructure development, climate resilience, energy transition, and regional integration.

The Institution expressed confidence that Prof. Adams’ leadership would strengthen collaboration among member institutions and contribute to sustainable development across West Africa.

It also pledged its full support to him as he prepares to lead WAFEO into what it described as a new era of innovation, partnership, and engineering excellence.
