Accra Mayor, Michael Allotey, has revealed that he personally joined a sanitation patrol over the weekend to arrest two people accused of illegally dumping refuse as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) intensifies efforts to keep the city clean.

The two suspects are expected to be arraigned before the court as part of the Assembly's renewed campaign to clamp down on sanitation offenders.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem, Allotey said the arrests were made on Sunday, July 5, 2026, while he was driving through parts of the capital with his driver.

"We have started arresting people," he said.

Recounting the incident, the Mayor disclosed that the suspects were caught dumping refuse from a tricycle.

"On Sunday, I didn't go to church, and while moving around town with my driver, we arrested two people who were dumping rubbish from a tricycle. We will arraign them before the court," he stated.

Allotey said the Assembly's latest enforcement exercise is targeting individuals who undermine efforts to improve sanitation by illegally disposing of waste, particularly under the cover of darkness.

"That is the mindset of some Ghanaians. Some tricycle riders collect rubbish from homes and, around 1 am to 2 am, dump it on the roads," he lamented.

He stressed that the AMA would not relent in its crackdown, revealing that he has personally joined the task force responsible for enforcing sanitation regulations across the city.

"When we get hold of you, nobody will come to plead for you. We will deal with you as we should. You will face the full rigours of the law," he warned.

The Mayor also expressed frustration that some residents continue to dump refuse at locations that have already been cleared by city authorities.

"We have cleared rubbish in various parts of Accra, but people go back to dump refuse. We will stop that behaviour," the Mayor declared.

The AMA has stepped up sanitation enforcement in the aftermath of the recent floods in Accra, with city authorities blaming indiscriminate waste disposal and choked drains for worsening flooding in several communities.
