Nobody goes to the university just to aquire critical thinking. Graduates want high paying jobs and easy employment opportunities..However, there are thousands of graduates who cannot get jobs in Ghana even if the job market is good. For graduates who are doctors, engineers pharmacists etc even if they can find jobs in the country, they can go outside or be self- employed.

This discussion is much broader than the scanty debate on Ghanaweb. In Ghana at the moment useless, empty, ignorant and largely uneducated bloggers are the ones analyzing financial, economic and development issues. Such mentality blocked characters wave documents on Facebook, YouTube and X and proffer backward analysis. Education is important, again degrees are also important but some degrees carry more weight and are relevant to the development of countries. I agree with Adutwum. Those who didn’t have the benefit of proper knowledge based education have the habit of dismissing University education. To all that lot including the Stone Age I have one advice: GO BACK TO SCHOOL. The reason why Ghana is as it is. The question is : Science subject is encouraging for what and on what reason? Answer : Because it leads to direct job opportunities. Either self employed or be employed easily by others waiting. In Europe and in the Far East, not what I have heard others saying, rather what I had seen Developed Governments advising applicants to take on.
In Ghana here, why is it that students are allowed to switch from Science course to other subjects, but not allowed to switch from different course to science? There is no need to answer this question apart from reasoning for personal answer.
Dr. Adutwum had spoken the truth for undergraduates seeing far to adjust rather than stagnation afterwards. Advice is free for others to adopt and adapt. Ignorants pay the price in nostalgia then regret.

The sweeping campaign comes as China races to become global leader in a slew of hi-tech ‘future industries’ and solve a severe graduate jobs crisis, which has left millions of young people struggling to find work. Between 2021 and 2025, China’s higher education institutions revoked or suspended 12,200 undergraduate programmes while introducing 10,200 new ones, meaning that more than 30% of the nation’s university programmes underwent adjustments, according to Ministry of Education data cited by Xinhua. What is our stand, as a country, on the “future industries” – the next-generation technologies? Do we even have national economic development goals, properly aligned with our educational system? Or it is business as usual, anything goes, while our universities continue to admit very large number of students to programmes that are either outdated or somehow irrelevant to our future needs. China is dropping foreign languages, while we are planning seriously to include Mandarin and Arabic in our basic school curricula. KNUST is veering seriously into the humanities/social sciences to compete with others instead of focusing more on STEM programmes. We will continue to be drawers of water and hewers of wood, if we don’t change. With that said, I agree with Dr Adutwum on that score.

It is one thing if students opt for such courses and it is another if the Universities imposes the courses on students. In the developed countries, no University imposes courses on students. Courses must be competitive.

Thank you Adutwum for stirring up this debate. It must have come out of bottled up frustration from the many years us of making the same mistakes about the focus of our education. The colonizers who put in place structures of our schools system did so to train hands to operate their businesses. Management and decision making was reserved for expatriates who protected their investments. For 70 years our sole purpose remain to produce workers for the job market. They leave school and they all go to queue for jobs. How about shifting our focus to educating our students to become job creators. Surely Government cannot be our sole employer? Neither should we look upon foreigners to come and create jobs. Let government commit to facilitating all new breed entrepreneurs; that should be the way to grow the economy and ease unemployment.

It is important for students to know what practical skills they will be equipped with before enrolling on the programme. These skills must be captured as exit outcomes—the specific skills and knowledge students must have when they finish a degree. This creates a backward design framework known as the "Design Down, Deliver Up" approach. If the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) makes it mandatory for universities to publish these goals for students to appreciate as part of the curriculum, many weak degree programs will fail

I am surprised he described Development Studies in the manner he did. Issues around poverty, education health tax expenditure analysis etc are the foundational knowledge of that discipline. He talks as if he is the only Ghana who ever got associated with education the US. I am curious to know from him why with a Oh.D in Education Planning from no mean school like UCLA, he had to go and set up a Charter school who only children of immigrant hustlers attend
