'I used it to pay my rent' – NSS personnel after 'stealing' his boss' GH¢308,300

Ebenezer Ghartey, a National Service Personnel attached to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), is facing trial for allegedly stealing GH¢308,300 from his immediate supervisor.

According to the prosecution, between March 31 and May 20, 2026, Ghartey transferred the funds into his mobile money account.

The complainant, an Administrative Officer at the DVLA under whose supervision Ghartey was serving, detected the theft on May 22, 2026, after noticing an unauthorized withdrawal of GH¢3,000 from her MTN merchant account.

She subsequently obtained transaction records from MTN, which allegedly identified Ghartey as the recipient of the transfers.

The matter was reported to the Cantonments Police, leading to his arrest.

During investigations, Ghartey reportedly told police that he was “not on salary” and had used the stolen money to pay his rent.

He also admitted to purchasing a Hyundai Elantra saloon car, a Samsung 50-inch television set, furniture, an air conditioner, a floor carpet, a dining table and chairs, a washing machine and a television rack and frame.

Additionally, he used part of the money to pay his sibling’s school fees.

Inspector Frank Morgan Dorvi, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Emmanuella Sarah Asmah that Ghartey admitted to the offence in his caution statement.

Ghartey, however, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing when he appeared before the Accra Circuit Court.

The court admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties resident within the jurisdiction.

One surety must justify the bail with landed property valued at not less than the bail sum, while another must be a public servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly.



The court further ordered Ghartey to report to the case investigator every Monday and Friday until further notice.

The case has been adjourned to August 4, 2026.
