Alexander Afenyo-Markin critiqued President Mahama's flood response
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has taken a swipe at President John Dramani Mahama over his response to the devastating June 29 floods, accusing the president of prioritising optics over meaningful action.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on July 7, 2026, the Effutu MP questioned why the president chose to survey the damage from a helicopter rather than visiting affected communities on the ground.
He further noted that neither the president nor any government official had reached out to families who lost loved ones or property in the disaster.
"We have not seen the president visiting families. We saw him in the air. We saw him in the helicopter," he said.

Afenyo-Markin further asked whether the government had even begun collecting data on those affected by the floods as a basis for any relief or recovery effort.
"Those who lost their lives, we have not seen any government official reaching out to them, their families, those who lost property. We have not seen any action from government. What we know is that the president was comfortably in the helicopter in the name of surveying.
The people who suffered are in their homes. Is the government taking data on those who suffered?" he asked.
The Minority Leader stated that he expected more than helicopter trips and press appearances from the government, calling for concrete steps to support those affected.
"I hold the view that beyond the optics, the government must show serious action," he said.
