Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, appeared before Parliament's Assurance Committee on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to provide updates on several key issues involving the country's security services.

The minister, whose Ministry oversees Ghana's security agencies, addressed matters including major drug seizures, recruitment into the security services, and other pressing security concerns.

However, some of the revelations made during the session, described by many as "explosive," have sparked widespread public debate and raised fresh questions.

Over 1,300 potential recruits test positive for HIV – Interior Minister

GhanaWeb has compiled four of the biggest revelations made by the minister before the committee.

1. Sapeiman Gold Bust:

On February 9, 2025, National Security operatives uncovered a cache of counterfeit currency and suspected gold bars hidden in 12 shipping containers at Sapeiman in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The operation, carried out following a tip-off, led officers to a warehouse where bundles of counterfeit US dollars were discovered concealed in wooden boxes encased in cement to evade detection.

Also retrieved during the raid were counterfeit Ghana cedi notes, fake Ghana Armed Forces uniforms, and military boots, raising serious national security concerns.

Speaking on that, the minister said that the alleged mastermind behind the suspected gold bars and counterfeit currency was still yet to be apprehended.

According to the minister, the counterfeit currencies seized during the operation have since been destroyed by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), while the suspected gold bars have been handed over to the Ghana Gold Board for further investigation and appropriate action.

“If you bust foreign currency, it's something we'll have to hand over to Bank of Ghana. If you bust gold, we hand it over to Gold Board. Unfortunately for us, the lead person in this, the real owner, had escaped but those that were arrested are still being prosecuted.

“Bank of Ghana also told us that when they picked that foreign currency, they were also fake so they have since destroyed them but the prosecution is ongoing. We have put some of the kingpins who have not been arrested on the stop list; any day that they try to run out of the country, we will arrest them,” he said.

2. Involvement of government official in Australian drug export

The minister also disclosed that preliminary investigations into the interception of a shipment of methamphetamine in Australia have uncovered possible internal collusion involving some government officials.

He said investigators were still interrogating several government officials over their suspected roles in facilitating the movement of the illicit drugs through Ghana's security systems.

"We are still interrogating a lot of government officials even as of yesterday. There is a lot that is not adding up. You will see that there's some involvement of some people within the system, and we are working to reach as many people as possible, who we think might have played one role or the other," he told the committee.

3. Applicants testing HIV positive

Another revelation made by Muntaka that appeared to have alarmed people is the disclosure that more than 1,300 applicants seeking to join Ghana’s security agencies have tested positive for HIV.

"I remember the recent recruitment we had. I think about 1,300 also were on HIV. Can you imagine sending somebody a result telling the person that you have HIV? That's not the procedure. The person has to go through some orientation," he said.

4. $350m cocaine seized at Pedu

The high-profile cocaine bust at Pedu Junction in the Central Region also featured during the committee's proceedings.

Responding to questions on the status of the case, Muntaka disclosed that the suspected cocaine, valued at more than $300 million, has been destroyed following a court order.
