Hanan was arrested at the Accra International Airport on July 4, 2026
New documents have emerged in the ongoing legal saga surrounding former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer Hanan Abdul-Wahab, shedding light on the medical background behind his controversial travel to the United Kingdom.
The documents, shared by X user @obiMpenaAustine on August 8, 2026, show that Hanan consulted two separate Ghanaian ophthalmologists before booking an appointment with Boots Opticians in London, countering the Attorney General's characterisation of the Boots booking as a "flimsy excuse" to leave the country.
According to the first document, dated June 22, 2026, Dr Stephen Akafo of Akafo Eye Services Ltd in East Legon examined Hanan and confirmed he had been suffering from watery, itchy eyes for the past five years, with a history of consultations with eye specialists in Chicago, London and Ghana.
Dr Akafo diagnosed him with allergic conjunctivitis and wrote a referral letter to support his appointment with an ophthalmologist in the UK who had previously treated him.
A second medical report from Robert and Sons Optical Services, dated June 23, 2026, similarly confirmed a diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis following an examination by Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr Naa Naamuah Tagoe.
The report noted that Hanan "desires to continue care abroad where he initiated treatment."
The Boots Opticians booking confirmation, also tendered as a court exhibit, shows an eye test appointment booked for June 23, 2026, at Boots Opticians London, Sedley Place, Oxford Street.
Hanan used ‘Boots’ online booking as medical appointment evidence to secure travel leave – AG tells court
The disclosures come after Attorney General Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine told the Accra High Court in an affidavit that the document Hanan presented to obtain court permission to travel was merely an online booking with Boots and did not constitute sufficient evidence of a confirmed medical appointment requiring travel abroad.
The affidavit, sworn by EOCO Assistant Staff Officer Radiatu Abdulai, forms part of an application seeking to revoke the court's earlier travel permission.
The AG also alleged that Hanan subsequently presented a court ruling lifting a freeze on his landed properties to his bankers as though it also applied to his frozen bank accounts, in an apparent attempt to withdraw funds.
Hanan was arrested at the Accra International Airport on July 4, 2026, as he prepared to travel for the medical appointment.
He is currently standing trial for alleged financial crimes, including stealing, money laundering and causing over GH¢300 million in financial loss to the state.
