The Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has assured that the Rent Control Department will support efforts to promote the GhanaWeb Real Estate platform as part of measures to help more people access credible housing services.

According to him, the department will make the necessary recommendations to encourage landlords, tenants, and other stakeholders to utilise the platform for their real estate needs.

Speaking at the official launch of the GhanaWeb Real Estate Platform at Alisa Hotel on July 9, 2026, Federick Opoku said the credibility of GhanaWeb over the years provides confidence in the platform’s ability to serve the public.

“For the past decades, GhanaWeb stands tall and still stands tall. The credibility of GhanaWeb is not in doubt. The assurance that I can give you is that the Rent Control Department of the Republic of Ghana will do everything humanly possible to make sure that we can make a lot of recommendations so that more people can be able to use the platform to do what is needed,” he said.

He noted that one of the key areas that would require attention on the platform is the involvement of real estate agents, stressing the need for users to be careful in dealing with professionals who are properly registered and credible.

“Definitely, I know very well that one very important issue here has to do with agents, and I really want you to open your eyes wide open to make sure that those people who use the platform, especially the agents, are people who are credible,” he added.

The Acting Rent Commissioner welcomed the establishment of the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC), saying it aligns with efforts to promote professionalism within the real estate sector.

He criticised the activities of unlicensed agents, popularly referred to as “quack agents,” who operate without proper identification, offices, or regulatory approval.

“I think that we are now moving in the direction the government wants to see, with real professional agents, not quack ones. I always call them quack agency agents, those who sit on trees with chalk and a board without any identifiable location or proper disclosure of their names. These are criminals. Criminals should not be given the opportunity to work with,” he stated.

The commissioner cautioned that the GhanaWeb Real Estate platform must ensure that individuals who operate through the platform are properly regulated and registered to protect users from fraudulent practices.

“I hope and pray that this beautiful platform will not give opportunities to people who are not regulated and registered,” he said.

He further assured that the Rent Control Department would be willing to collaborate with GhanaWeb to scrutinise agents who use the platform, emphasising that credibility should remain a priority over increasing user numbers.

“It should not be that GhanaWeb wants to get more followers or people to support the platform and allows quack people to be part of this,” he cautioned.

The Acting Rent Commissioner encouraged stakeholders to approach the platform with due diligence, expressing confidence that it would become a valuable tool in Ghana’s real estate space.

“Our advice is that you should be cautious and tread carefully. I believe that this platform has come to stay and that you should do what is needful,” he added.
