The Rent Control Department will soon deploy about 2,000 task force personnel across the country to enforce compliance with Ghana's rent laws.
Speaking at the launch of the GhanaWeb Real Estate Platform on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku said the exercise is aimed at ensuring landlords and tenants comply with the provisions of the Rent Act, particularly those relating to rent assessment.
He said the deployment is necessary because many property owners continue to disregard the law by charging rent without first obtaining the required assessment from the Rent Control Department.
"Very soon, I will be deploying about 2,000 rent task force personnel across the country to ensure that people comply with the rules of the game and understand what the law requires," he said.
He cited Sections 10 to 14 of the Rent Act, explaining that landlords are not permitted to impose or increase rent arbitrarily without first obtaining an assessment from the department.
According to him, the failure of landlords to use the rent assessment system has contributed significantly to the growing unaffordability of housing in the country.
He noted that the task force would help improve compliance with existing laws and promote fairness in the rental market by ensuring that the legal procedures governing rent determination are followed.
The announcement was made during the launch of the GhanaWeb Real Estate Platform, which seeks to improve transparency in Ghana's property market through verified property listings and digital tools for buyers, sellers, renters, and real estate professionals.
