Industry provides a lot of experience but it does not necessarily equip one for the rigour advanced academic degrees require. The fundamental problem is that we by culture intellectually lazy. That is why gossip and rumour preoccupy us. Reading is a problem for the average Ghanaian. And deep thinking is a pain to us.

A national government agenda that states clearly an urgent need for people in agriculture to boost food production, would and should, prioritize the recruitment, education, post-education practical training and certifications followed by placement on either government procured farmlands or as technical aides to rural faming communities. The people and government would be foolish sending people on scholarships to study accounting, business administration, fine-arts and others while people interested in advanced studies in the field of agriculture, agronomy, fertilizer production, mechanized farming and etc are sidelined.

It is in the same logical reasoning I find the national government's policy priorities as the underlying cause of failures in the field of science, engineering and technology education in Ghana. Take for example an agency like the YEA. It recently sent people off to the USA on the YEA's "Work Abroad" jobs program module. I do not give a rat's as* if the program is fully sponsored by the US government or by a US philanthropic group; chasing it shows our priority as a nation and that jobs for the youth of Ghana to reduce unemployment amongst our youth is foremost.

If Engineering, science and technology is a priority then we must show our efforts and determination through our education. We must demand and insist, as a nation via the Scholarship Secrerariat, that 98 percent of all scholarship offered by or through the Ghana government and use of foreign exchange reserves for the education of Ghanaians abroad will go to people interested in pursuing engineering, science and technology. I will minimize the number of architectural engineers in the pool.

On the other hand our children on social media are seen demonstrating their dancing skills and how to speak in tongues in their churches. We have professors and Doctors in many academic institutions but look at the nature of even our roads. If an equipment is produce, there are standard processes it must go through to evaluate its performance, i.e a structured, continuous process used to demonstrate adevice’s scientific validity, analytical performance, and clinical safety. When it meets all these and other performance measures before it is satisfied for clinical usage. What a hell to go and ask doctor such basic useless question.

Prof. Kaufman talked about the method of teaching in our schools and its detrimental consequences on society, but not the so-called useless courses being proffered by the former education minister. We cannot compare the two arguments. It is rather unfortunate that Akufo-Addo especially brought Adutwum from the USA to help him run and reform the educational system in Ghana. Still, he woefully failed to identify the flaws and do the right things whilst he had the chance. The NPP always becomes a guru in everything only when it is in opposition. Give them power, and they destroy everything. Their main concern when in power is how to fleece the national coffers and later point fingers at redeemers and cry wolf.

If he had brought his observation up during his days as a minister of education and at an educational review workplace many would have looked into it with professional and nationalistic lenses and proferd solutions to it or against it. It has now almost become political and social media issue with people viewing or reacting to it with the least idea on education and employment. Imagine a programme like science communication which is made up of shallow bits of various aspects of various causes pieced up together such as jounerlism, public relations, communication, political science etc, etc, etc. Who will an employer choose when it comes to offering a job between someone who has done a detailed study of the fragmented courses and the science communication graduate? There are many of such programmes in our universities that ruin the future of the graduates than prepare them for life.

As soon as I changed and started chewing and pouring for them my grades changed drastically but it was too late so ended up with 2nd class lower level. However, on the job after school, I was the best amongst my colleagues and ended up with a very lucrative job there after. Our professors are part of the problem!

Dr Adutwum promoted STEM and TVET education which must be continued as a matter of national priority,Professor Kauffman is saying the same thing,unfortunately President Mahama and his Minister of Education are interested in expansion of legal education.Vietnam has set a target to train 100,000 engineers/scientists per year for 10yrs,that is one million engineers and scientists in 10yrs, they want to catch up with the advanced world and this is the way to go.The President and his Ministers are aware of this!
