Two-day national clean-up not enough to restore flood-hit areas – Brogya Genfi

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has acknowledged that the two-day nationwide clean-up exercise will not be sufficient to fully restore communities devastated by the recent floods, citing the scale of destruction across affected areas.

Speaking to the media during the national clean-up exercise on Friday, July 10, 2026, Brogya Genfi said the damage caused by the floods was too extensive to be addressed within two days.

"Clearly, it will not be enough. Two days will not be enough. You can see the damage that has been caused," he said.

He explained that while the exercise would make significant progress in clearing affected communities, a more sustained response would be required to complete the recovery efforts.

"It's too huge for two days. But two days, we'll be able to do some substantial works," he indicated.

Brogya Genfi disclosed that the post-flood coordinating team, of which the Ministry of Defence is a member, would assess the outcome of the exercise and present its recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama for further action.

"I believe that the post-flood coordinating team, which the Ministry is a member, will sit to review and brief the president and see the way forward," he said.

The nationwide clean-up exercise forms part of the government's response to the devastating floods on June 29, 2026, that affected several communities, with security agencies, public institutions, and volunteers joining efforts to clear debris, desilt drains, and improve sanitation to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and future flooding.
