17-year-old Daniela Nyarko has explained why she fled her home, alleging that she could no longer endure what she described as abuse by her father, Martin Owusu Nyarko.
Speaking in an interview on Ahenfie TV, a snippet of which was sighted by GhanaWeb on July 13, 2026, Daniela said she decided to leave home after completing her final WASSCE examination because she feared for her safety and wellbeing.
According to Daniela, her father allegedly subjected her and her younger siblings to prolonged periods of fasting, particularly during school holidays.
"Sometimes I am made to go without food for an entire day, while my younger siblings are required to fast from 6 am to 6 pm. He has cameras installed in the house to monitor us and even follows me whenever he sends me to refill our gas cylinder," she alleged.
Daniela further claimed that her father shaved off her hair, confiscated her waist beads, and refused to buy her bras despite her discomfort as a teenage girl.
"He said bras were not included in my SHS prospectus, so he wouldn't buy any for me. He also makes me wear my late mother's slit and kaba to church. It's very embarrassing. I cannot continue living with him, which is why I slipped away when he came to pick me up after my final WASSCE paper," she said.
A teacher who appeared on the programme reportedly corroborated aspects of Daniela's account.
Responding to the allegations during the same programme, Martin Owusu Nyarko denied any wrongdoing, insisting that his actions were motivated by concern for his children's wellbeing.
He described himself as a pastor and a father who knows what is best for his family, explaining that the fasting was intended to avert what he believed to be a looming spiritual misfortune affecting the household.
He also maintained that his actions were part of his parental responsibility to instill discipline and shape his children's character.
During the discussion, Daniela stated that following her mother's death, she had no contact with her maternal relatives.
However, one of Daniela's aunties appeared on the programme after she heard the matter on Ahenfie TV.
She claimed that the children's father had prevented her and other family members from maintaining contact with them.
She also made allegations regarding the circumstances surrounding the mother's treatment before her death.
"When my sister was alive. She used to confide in me that her husband made her fast while she was still pregnant. She fainted one day while still pregnant and passed on," she said.
Daniela further alleged that her father had threatened to kill her if she ever attempted to leave home.
Producers of the show subsequently contacted the Department of Social Welfare to assist in them to resolve the matter.
