Profile of the late Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II

Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, has died after serving on the throne for seven years.

He became the 41st Yaa Naa in January 2019 following the successful implementation of the Dagbon Peace Roadmap, which brought an end to the protracted chieftaincy conflict that had divided the kingdom for years.

History of the Dagbon State

Born into the Dagbon royal family at Mion, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II was the son of Yaa Naa Mahama II, who ruled Dagbon from 1938 until February 6, 1948.

His mother, Ayishetu, was a princess from Kulunkpegu, a community near Chaazaadaanyili in the Northern Region.

Before ascending the Dagbon throne, he served as the chief of Kpunkpono and was later elevated to the skin of Savelugu, one of the three gate skins from which a Yaa Naa is selected.

One of his most significant achievements was restoring peace to Dagbon after nearly two decades of chieftaincy disputes.

His enskinment marked the reunification of the Abudu and Andani royal gates and ushered in a period of stability in the kingdom.

As part of efforts to promote development, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II launched the Dagbon Development Fund in 2021 to mobilise resources for the socio-economic advancement of the kingdom.

On March 4, 2023, he cut the sod for the reconstruction of the historic Gbewaa Palace, a project supported by donations from individuals, corporate organisations and state institutions.

He also initiated a review of the Dagbon Constitution in 2020 to strengthen the traditional governance system and address emerging challenges within the kingdom.

Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II is remembered for promoting peace, unity and development during his reign, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the Dagbon Kingdom after years of instability.
