Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah addresses role of local government in sanitation

A lecturer at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has called for stronger local governance to help tackle sanitation challenges in the country.

According to him cleanliness starts at the local or community level hence strict enforcement and stronger actions at those levels is significant in addressing sanitation issues.

The lecturer further explained that failure of residents in municipalities, districts and local assemblies to obey sanitation laws has led to poor environmental challenges nationwide, adding that, weak enforcement of sanitation regulations at the local levels affects national efforts to keep the country clean.

Speaking on Channel One TVs Breakfast Daily he said, “Cleanliness really at a very micro level is the mandate of the local governance and so, if at our various municipalities, at our various districts, our various assemblies, we are not seeing people abiding by the rules and the laws and also the community and the communal labour structure that we have had over the years. If we are seeing that being broken down at a very local level, then I mean at the national level you clearly will see that this would be a great havoc to us. So, we must strengthen our local governance structure in terms of certain sanitation and ensure that we begin to put in stricter measures at a very local level because every single Ghanian comes from a village”.

He urged citizens to desist from indiscriminate disposing of refuse and littering of the environment.

Dr Boakye-Danquah also urged the government to provide enough waste disposal equipment’s, including placing dustbins at vantage points to promote proper waste disposal and clean environment.

“We must have that civic responsibility to issue throwing away rubbish indiscriminately and so the government must also provide means within which dustbins can be in close proximity to people and I think that if we do this over and over again, we'll be able to have a cleaner city and a cleaner Ghana,” he said.
