Miracles Aboagye’s Arrest: 'Rule of law is sitting upside down' - Atta Akyea

Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has said the handling of Dennis Miracles Aboagye’s arrest questions Ghana’s commitment to constitutional protections and the rule of law.

Aboagye remains under investigation by EOCO over alleged corruption linked to his time at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation after being arrested at the Kotoka International Airport.

Atta Akyea said investigators spent several hours questioning his client before imposing bail conditions he believes are difficult to satisfy.

“‘At this very hour, they are about to exceed the 48 hours as enshrined in the Constitution,'” he said.

He argued that the developments reflect a worrying trend.

“‘I can say that the rule of law is sitting upside down. Democracy and the rule of law have been reversed backwards,'” he stated.

According to Atta Akyea, the process followed in the case does not reflect how investigations should be conducted.

“‘I don’t believe that is how we should conduct affairs,'” he added.
