How Jerry Ahmed reacted to Miracles Aboagye's arrest

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling NDC government, warning that the arrest and detention of NPP members is getting out of hand.

Speaking at a protest demanding the release of party communications team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on July 13, 2026, Shaib said the frequency of arrests of political opponents by the ruling NDC government is becoming excessive.

According to him, Ghana is gradually turning into a “banana republic,” a situation that is leaving citizens increasingly unhappy.

“We cannot keep doing that. In fact, I decided not to talk today, but it’s just becoming too much. He has solidarity not just from the Minority, but from the state of Ghana. People are beginning to think the country is virtually becoming a banana republic,” he claimed.

“My prayer, truthfully and honestly, is that you see- it may be Jerry today, but James, you should know that it can be you tomorrow. When things keep going on like this, you should know it will be your turn,” he added.

He argued that Aboagye could simply have been invited to answer questions rather than arrested upon his return from a trip, as though he were a criminal.

“The right approach should be to let the person know about the situation and invite him to report. If he fails to report, then you can take a step. But when someone is travelling, you forcefully pick him up at the airport without even knowing if it’s for medical reasons. And once you have picked him, you don’t give him access to his family, his friends, or his lawyers. You keep him, and nobody knows where,” he disclosed.

Shaib further declared: “I don’t think anybody wants to share his plans outside. We know what to do, and we’ll deal with it. It’s just becoming too much!”
