'FIFA wants Messi to reach the final' - Joe Cole alleges

Former England international Joe Cole has stirred debate ahead of England’s FIFA World Cup semifinal against Argentina after claiming there is a widespread belief that Lionel Messi and the reigning champions are receiving favourable treatment.

Speaking during a discussion before the blockbuster clash, Cole said England should use the perception that “everyone wants Lionel Messi to win this” as motivation, creating an “us against the world” mentality in the dressing room.

“I think FIFA wants Messi to reach the final,” Cole said.

He, however, clarified that he was not accusing football’s governing body of fixing matches.

Instead, he argued that the general feeling around the football world is that many people want to see the Argentine captain reach another World Cup final.

Cole also warned England to be prepared for Argentina’s renowned gamesmanship, saying they would have to deal with more than just the football.

He recalled the controversial 1998 World Cup incident involving David Beckham and Diego Simeone, where Beckham was sent off after reacting to a challenge from the Argentine midfielder.

According to Cole, England’s players must remain composed, predicting that Rodrigo De Paul could attempt to unsettle Jude Bellingham during the match.

“You have to deal with all that stuff before you can actually play. I think they’re going to target Jude Bellingham. I think you’ll see De Paul getting under his skin all the time,” he added.
