For reference, the US (the richest nation on earth) has only 9 supreme court justices, the UK (consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) has 12, Japan has 15 and Germany has 16.

There is simply no justification for us to have 21

Please kindly note that from 2016 to 2024 the total number of Supreme Court Judges were 15 including the Chief Justice.
In 2026 three more Supreme Court Judges were appointed by President Mahama to bring the tally to 18. If these appointments are confirmed it will make up to 21. Also note that some Senior Judges could be retiring soon whilst others could be ill and can not perform their duties as expected. So in my view the appointments are necessary to fill the vacancies and to ensure a speedy and continuous hearing of cases without disruptions.

I am a Sefwi from Humjibre in the Bibiani- Ahwianso -Bekwai municipality in the western north region and I can say justices Kweku Ackaah Boafo and now nominated Asante Amoako goes to confirm that Prez Mahama is not like Akuffo Addo who perceived justice Dzamefe as an NDC affiliated and left him to 'rot' at the court of Appeal. Other countries may have fewer Supreme Court judges, the US has 9 but in the US the Supreme Court selects cases which it wants to do. In other jurisdictions you need leave before filing a case at the Supreme Court, that means you need permission from the Supreme Court before you can file a case at the Supreme Court.

In Ghana anyone at all can decide to take his or her case to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal. So the Supreme Court is inundated with too many cases and the cases keep too long.
Some academic lawyers think that because of that the quality of some of the judgments are not as good as can be because of time constraints. The fewer the cases the more the judges have time to do research and deliver more quality judgment. A shorter judgment will deliver the same justice as a longer but longer judgment may be of much more quality judgment than a shorter judgment.

The number of judges has been a matter of debate among lawyers and academics for a long time. The constitution does not put a ceiling on the number of judges. The population of ghana has increased since the constitution was promulgated. The number has been hovering around 9 to 12. At a point President Kuffuor had to appoint an additional judge so that the Supreme Court could take up Tsatsu Tsikata' review application. That was bad. The increased number would reduce the waiting time of hearing cases and increase the quality of some of the judgments. The benefits of the increment outweighs the cost.
