As of 2026, Ghana's installed solar energy capacity sits at approximately 188 MW to 220 MW (0.22 GW). While solar still accounts for a small fraction (around 1% to 3%) of the country’s total domestic generation capacity, which is heavily dominated by thermal and hydropower, the sector is currently experiencing a massive acceleration.
Key Highlights of Ghana's Solar Landscape
Current Largest Operational Asset: The largest operating solar plant is the 50 MW hybrid hydro-solar system at the Bui Generating Station, managed by the Bui Power Authority.
The Norbert Anku Solar Park (Ground Broken): In late 2025, Ghana broke ground on its largest solar undertaking to date—the Norbert Anku Solar Park (located in the Dawa Industrial Enclave, Greater Accra). Developed by Solar for Industries Ltd. (a subsidiary of LMI Holdings), this massive project is planned in phases:
Phase 1 (100 MW): Slated for completion by December 2026.
Phase 2 (100 MW): Expected to connect to the grid nine months later.
Long-term Goal: Plans to scale up to 1 GW by 2032, which would make it the largest solar farm in Sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa.
Rural Electrification & Decentralization: The African Development Bank (AfDB) is funding an $85 million program targeting the rollout of 67.8 MW of decentralized solar across 35 mini-grids and 12,000 rooftop/net-metered solar systems for rural, island, and lakeside communities.
Local Manufacturing on the Horizon: To reduce reliance on imports, Germany's KfW development bank issued a tender for a 75 MW per year solar module assembly plant in Kumasi, which is scheduled to be completed between 2026 and 2027.
Long-Term Ambitions
Under Ghana’s updated Energy Transition and Investment Plan (ETIP), the country is targeting 26 GW of solar capacity by 2040, with the ultimate goal of reaching 146 GW to 150 GW by 2060 to anchor its net-zero emissions targets.
