The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has given all Rural and Community Banks in Ghana until December 31, 2026, to complete their transition to the new Community Banking model.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, said the institutions are expected to complete their statutory name changes, corporate rebranding, and other regulatory requirements before the deadline.

He announced this during the 50th anniversary celebration of Rural Banking in Ghana and the official launch of the Community Banking transition programme on July 16, 2026.

Dr Asiama explained that the reform goes beyond a mere name change, as it is intended to reposition the banks to better meet the financial needs of communities, local businesses, and underserved groups.

“Existing Rural Banks are required to complete their statutory name changes, corporate rebranding and other regulatory alignment by the end of December 2026,” he said.

The Governor assured the banks of the central bank's support throughout the transition, adding that appropriate regulations and supervisory measures would be introduced to ensure the successful implementation of the Community Banking model.

He said the new framework would strengthen governance, improve operational efficiency, and enhance risk management across the sector.

According to Dr Asiama, the transition will also enable Community Banks to expand access to savings, credit, and digital financial services while providing greater support to agriculture, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and other underserved groups.

He expressed optimism that the new model would position the sector for sustainable growth through innovation, stronger governance, and improved service delivery, while deepening financial inclusion and supporting local economic development.
